Flats and cats

The girls drift around the store cradling wire baskets
filled with soya beans, miso and wakame seaweed
the dim inward gaze of Elizabeth Siddal in Rossetti’s ‘Jenny’
in one bedroom flats with their cats
they cook macrobiotic foods
the beatific look is
inner virtue or malnourishment

Serious, narcissistic, terrifyingly provident
they brim with latent violence
feeding on honey, grape juice and brown rice
bookshelves of Steppenwolf, Trout Fishing in America, I-Ching
the cat has not eaten meat for six months
now spitting and feral
the girls drift around the store and wait
